Jones softball sweeps Holmes with no-hitter, walk-off homer
ELLISVILLE — The Jones softball team swept Holmes on Saturday at Community Bank Park, winning 14-0 in five innings in the opener and 8-0 in six innings in the nightcap. The No. 6 Bobcats improved to 30-7 overall and 9-3 in the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference. Holmes fell to 20-18 and 5-9 in league play.
In the first game, Madison Sawyer pitched a five-inning no-hitter, striking out nine batters and allowing only two baserunners. Jones scored early and often, with seven runs in the top of the first inning. Mary Kimble Price hit a three-run homer to left-center, driving in Annaston Tate and Claire Andersen. The Bobcats added to their lead with RBIs from Chloe Jenkins, Reagan Dale, and Tate, along with aggressive baserunning and a Holmes wild pitch.
The offense continued in the third inning, with Price driving in another run on a two-run single, pushing the lead to 10-0. In the fourth, Laney Little added a run with a single, Tate scored on a sacrifice fly, and Mikayla Baumgartner drove in two runs with a single to cap the scoring at 14-0.
In the second game, Jones again took control early. Price opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the first inning. The Bobcats broke the game open in the third, with Addy Shorter and Reagan Dale each contributing RBIs, and Little drawing a bases-loaded walk to increase the lead to 5-0. Eason hit her team-leading 14th home run in the fourth, and Little’s solo shot in the sixth sealed the win.
Jones totaled 11 hits in game two and worked six walks. Price reached base four times and had two RBIs, while Eason scored three runs and homered. Little drove in two runs, including her walk-off homer. Breelyn Cain earned the victory on the mound, pitching six innings of three-hit ball with five strikeouts and no walks.
