Jones escapes Nunez in ninth to remain unbeaten against Pelicans
ELLISVILLE, Miss. — No. 14 Jones scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat Nunez 6-5 Wednesday night at Community Bank Park. Brayden Quick delivered a walk-off single to secure the victory, Jones’s sixth straight win and eighth of the season.
The Bobcats remained unbeaten against Nunez in nine meetings. Trailing 3-0 after four innings, Jones rallied with a sacrifice fly from Brayden Quick that scored Chase Russell. Sanders Ainsworth’s two-run single in the fifth tied the game at 3-3. Kelan Guidry’s RBI-single in the sixth gave Jones the lead, 4-3.
Nunez retook the lead in the top of the seventh. Logan Coley’s two-run single put the Pelicans ahead. In the bottom of the ninth, Warren Hutchinson and Talan Theriot both singled and advanced on wild pitches. After Ainsworth was hit-by-pitch to load the bases, Dylan Champagne was intentionally walked. Quick then delivered the game-winning single through the left side, sealing the victory.
Jones’s pitcher Drew Lambert pitched six innings, allowing five hits, five strikeouts and three runs. Canyon Reeves, in relief, held Nunez to one run despite inheriting a tough situation with two runners on in the seventh. Six Bobcats had multiple hits, led by Talan Theriot’s three.
Jones hosts Reid State on Friday for a doubleheader at 2 p.m. Tickets are $8 online and $10 at the gate. The games will stream live on jcbobcats.com/watch, with Shawn Wansley calling the action.
