Jones College Sweeps Coahoma to Stay Near MACCC Leader

ELLISVILLE — Jones College continued its dominance over Coahoma with a doubleheader sweep at Community Bank Park on Good Friday, keeping close to the top of the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference standings. The third-ranked Bobcats improved to 28-9 overall and 11-3 in the MACCC, just one game behind the conference leader, according to school officials.

Jones’s victory in the opener was highlighted by a six-run second inning, which set the tone for a 11-4 win. Dakota Smith opened the scoring with an RBI single, and Chase Russell hit a three-run homer to right-center during the inning. Dylan Champagne later added a two-run shot to cap the scoring.

Russell, who also pitched six innings to earn the win, finished 2-for-4 at the plate with two home runs and five RBIs. He allowed three runs on four hits and struck out two. The Bobcats added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, extending their lead.

Coahoma rallied in the middle innings, with Colyn West driving in two runs with a double and James Washington III adding an RBI single. West had three RBIs in total. Jones responded quickly, with Russell hitting his second two-run homer in the sixth to push the lead to 10-3. An RBI single by Brady Smith in the seventh provided additional insurance.

Coahoma scored its final run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly from West, but the Bobcats’ offense totaled 14 hits, led by Ainsworth’s 3-for-4 performance. Smith and Kelan Guidry added two hits each.

The nightcap was a pitcher’s duel, with Jones’s Drew Lambert tossing a complete-game four-hitter for a 1-0 victory. Lambert struck out three and worked around three walks, earning his third win of the season. The only run came in the third inning on an RBI single from Dylan Champagne.

Coahoma’s Tanner Bridgewater allowed just one run over six innings but took the loss. Russell went 0-for-3 at the plate, ending his streak of reaching base in 67 consecutive games.

Jones is set to face Copiah-Lincoln on April 8 in their next game, marking the start of three straight away-from-home contests, according to team officials.
