Jackson State’s Ruffin Named HBCUGO Player of the Year

Jackson State senior guard Daeshun Ruffin was named the HBCUGO National Player of the Year Tuesday, marking his second major award in as many weeks. He was also named SWAC Player of the Year last week, according to the university.

Ruffin is one of only three players nationwide to average more than 20 points and five assists during the regular season. He finished third in scoring at 23.3 points per game and averaged 5.3 assists for Jackson State.

The senior scored in double figures in 19 of 20 games to close the season. The only game he did not reach double figures was the season finale against Mississippi Valley State, when he left early in the first half. He totaled 25 games with double figures, including eight games with 30 or more points, four of which were conference games.

Ruffin also recorded 16 games with five or more assists, including three games with 10 or more. He posted season highs of 16 assists against Texas Southern, along with 39 points and 10 assists in one game against Alabama. He also had double-doubles in three games, with a season-high 39 points and 10 assists against Alabama.

At the conclusion of the regular season, Ruffin ranks nationally in several categories, including fourth in points per game, fifth in free throws made, eighth in free throw attempts, and 10th in field goal attempts. He leads the SWAC in free throw attempts, free throws made, and points per game, while also ranking in the top three in multiple other categories.
