Jackson State women’s tennis finishes undefeated in SWAC with season-ending win

JACKSON, Miss. — The Jackson State women’s tennis team defeated Alcorn State 4-0 on Saturday, ending their season undefeated in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.

Victoria Linkovski and Helen Hernandez opened the match with a 6-1 victory in doubles at No. 1. Daniela Tovar and Tiara Alvarez narrowly lost a 7-6 decision at No. 2 doubles to Zoe Crimmel and Oihane V. Lopez, setting the stage for a decisive point. Isabella Benavides and Paula Corbalan rallied in the doubles match, winning 7-6 to secure the doubles point.

In her final match at the JSU Tennis Center, Benavides defeated Crimmel 6-0, 6-0 in singles. Junior Helen Hernandez contributed the third point with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 4. Corbalan sealed the victory with a 6-1, 6-2 win, clinching Jackson State’s eighth conference win and completing their perfect regular season.

The Tigers will open the SWAC Tournament in New Orleans against No. 8 Mississippi Valley State on Friday at 9 a.m. The winner advances to face either No. 4 Southern or No. 5 Florida A&M in the semifinals.
