Jackson State Women’s Basketball Loses to Southern Jaguars at Home
Jackson State’s women’s basketball team lost to Southern 67-43 Thursday at home, despite outrebounding the Jaguars 40-34. The Tigers had two players score in double figures, led by Pierre-Noelle Tcheuhchoua with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Jaileyah Cotton added 10 points and two steals, while Derrica McCall contributed four points and three steals. Tcheuhchoua also led the team with five offensive rebounds and helped generate second-chance opportunities, with Jackson State grabbing 24 offensive boards and converting them into 13 second-chance points.
The Tigers forced 21 Southern turnovers, which resulted in six points on the offensive end. McCall led the team with three steals. Despite these efforts, Jackson State struggled early, trailing 19-6 after the first quarter and 38-17 at halftime. The deficit grew to 61-27 after three quarters.
Jackson State played well inside, scoring six of its 10 points in the paint in the final quarter. The Tigers narrowed the margin to 67-36 before finishing the game with a 7-0 run, capped by a Cotton layup, to bring the final score to 67-43.
The Tigers finished with 26 points in the paint, 13 second-chance points, and 11 fast-break points. They shot 25% from the field and 44% from the free-throw line. Southern was led by Mykayla Cunningham and Demonnie Lagway, each with 10 points. The Jaguars shot nearly 48% from the field and over 66% from the free-throw line, totaling 36 bench points and 32 in the paint.
