Jackson State Women’s Basketball Falls to Florida A&M 68-63
Jackson State’s women’s basketball team shot 55.6% from beyond the arc but lost to Florida A&M 68-63 Thursday evening in Tallahassee, Florida, according to the school.
Two Tigers scored in double figures, led by Angel Wilkinson, who finished with 18 points and six rebounds. Jaileyah Cotton added 10 points and five assists, while Rhema Pegues contributed seven points and seven rebounds. Jackson State made 10 three-pointers on 18 attempts, with Wilkinson draining five of those shots.
The Tigers opened the game with a 5-0 run, capped by a Wilkinson three, to lead 9-6 with 4:47 left in the first quarter. Florida A&M responded to tie the game at 16-16 at the end of the first quarter. Jackson State then took a 23-21 lead after capitalizing on three Rattlers turnovers. A 7-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Jada Patton, pushed the Tigers’ advantage to 30-21. The Rattlers trimmed the lead but Jackson State still held a 39-33 edge at halftime, thanks in part to five made three-pointers in the second quarter.
Jackson State’s lead diminished in the third quarter, and the team trailed 56-51 entering the final period. The Tigers scored six points in the quarter from two three-pointers. Florida A&M extended its lead to 65-58 in the fourth before Jackson State rallied with a 5-0 run, finished by a layup from Camryn O’Neil, to pull within two points at 65-63 with 1:59 remaining. However, the Rattlers outscored the Tigers down the stretch to secure the victory.
The Tigers excelled in the paint, scoring eight of their 12 points in the area. Jackson State also controlled the glass, outrebounding FAMU 26-22 and collecting 11 offensive rebounds. The team shot 46% from the field and 58.3% from the free-throw line, with 29 bench points and 20 points scored in the paint.
