Jackson State Women’s Basketball Edges Bethune-Cookman in Florida

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Jackson State’s women’s basketball team finished its Florida trip with a 52-46 win over Bethune-Cookman on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers limited the Wildcats to 20 percent shooting from three-point range, making just 2 of 10 attempts, according to the school.

Jackson State had two players score in double figures. Rhema Pegues led the team with 10 points and two steals. Jaileyah Cotton added 10 points and four assists, while Angel Wilkinson contributed six points and five steals. The Tigers also out-rebounded Bethune-Cookman 43-34, led by Mikayla Brown’s 10 boards. Jackson State grabbed 20 offensive rebounds and scored 14 second-chance points.

The Tigers forced 20 Wildcats turnovers, converting them into 14 points. Wilkinson’s five steals led the team in that category. Jackson State opened the game with a 15-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Pierre-Noelle Tcheuhchoua to take a 16-2 lead with 8:05 remaining in the first quarter. The team maintained control, leading 18-5 after the first quarter and 28-15 at halftime.

Jackson State continued to hold its advantage after halftime, leading 39-34 entering the final quarter. The Tigers hit two three-pointers in the fourth quarter to score six of their 11 points in that period and finished the game outscoring Bethune-Cookman 13-12 in the final frame.

Jackson State shot 70 percent (7-for-10) from the free throw line and 31.7 percent (19-for-60) from the field. The team scored 18 points in the paint, 18 bench points, and had 14 points off turnovers. Bethune-Cookman shot 61.6 percent (8-for-13) from the free throw line and 35.3 percent (18-for-51) from the field. Madison Holden led the Wildcats with 20 points, and Sanai Tyler grabbed 13 rebounds.
