Jackson State Women’s Basketball Defeats Texas Southern Behind Cotton’s Double-Double

Jackson State’s women’s basketball team defeated Texas Southern 65-52 on the road Saturday, thanks in part to Jaileyah Cotton’s double-double. Cotton scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Tigers (11-17, 9-7 SWAC).

Jackson State held Texas Southern to 17.4 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 29.1 percent overall. The Tigers forced 22 turnovers and converted them into 12 points, controlling the game from the start.

Jackson State opened the scoring with a 6-0 run and led 17-13 after the first quarter. The Tigers extended their lead to 42-26 by halftime, capitalizing on six first-half turnovers by Texas Southern. The third quarter saw Jackson State push its advantage to 48-26 before Texas Southern trimmed the deficit somewhat. The Tigers entered the final period with a 54-37 lead and maintained their margin to secure the win.

In addition to Cotton’s performance, Derrica McCall scored 15 points with four steals, and Mikayla Brown added 12 points and six rebounds for Jackson State. The Tigers will conclude the regular season at home Tuesday against UAPB, with tipoff set for 5 p.m.
