Jackson State Tennis Players Earn SWAC Weekly Honors
Jackson State claimed three Southwestern Athletic Conference awards Wednesday, recognizing standout performances from its tennis players last week. The honors include Player of the Week, Co-Newcomer of the Week, and another Player of the Week award for the men’s team.
Isabella Benavides, a senior, was named SWAC Women’s Player of the Week after helping Jackson State to two wins on the road against Southern and Alabama State. She went 3-1 in her matches, winning in both doubles and singles. Benavides teamed with Paula Corbalan for a 6-2 doubles victory over Alabama State and also posted singles wins of 6-1, 6-0 against Alabama State and 7-6, 6-0 against Southern.
Victoria Linkovski, a freshman, was named SWAC Women’s Co-Newcomer of the Week after winning both her matches against Southern. She and Helen Hernandez secured a 6-4 doubles victory at number one, while Linkovski claimed a 6-0, 6-1 singles win to help the Tigers shut out the Jaguars on Saturday.
Ching Chang Chiu, a junior, received SWAC Men’s Player of the Week honors after a 2-0 day against Southern. His win at number two singles came with a 6-4, 6-0 score, clinching the match for Jackson State. Chiu also contributed to the doubles point with partner Chen Hung-Yu, winning 6-3.
