Jackson State Opens Andre Dawson Classic in Vero Beach

VERO BEACH, Fla. — Jackson State baseball heads to Vero Beach for the second time in three days to open play against Texas Southern in the Andre Dawson Classic. The game is scheduled for 11 a.m. Eastern Time on MLB.com.

The weekend features additional matchups against Yale on MLB Network and Grambling State on MLB.com. This marks the Tigers’ second consecutive weekend participating in an MLB-hosted event. Jackson State, which is 1-3 this season, hopes to rebound after back-to-back losses to Alcorn State and Ole Miss.

Offensively, the Tigers are led by sophomore Ledy Alvarez, who is batting .600 with a 1.533 slugging percentage, an on-base percentage of .800, and a .733 OPS. Alvarez has six hits in 10 at-bats, scored five runs, and recorded two RBIs, reaching base in all four games this season. Other contributors include juniors Isaac McClenty and Tyree Reed, along with senior Pierre Cabral and freshman Robert Tate Jr., each with three hits.

Cabral leads the team with four RBIs, while McClenty and Reed each have three. Jackson State has stolen 10 bases in 11 attempts through four games, with Alvarez perfect at 5-for-5 on stolen bases.

On the mound, the Tigers are guided by Derek Arrocha, who is 1-0 after striking out nine in six innings against Alabama A&M last Saturday. The team has used 12 pitchers this season; notably, sophomore Talmadge Davis and junior Jaedeyn Edwards each have a 0.00 earned run average.
