Jackson State Hosts New Orleans in Midweek Baseball Game
Jackson State is set to host New Orleans on Tuesday night at Braddy Field, concluding a four-game homestand. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m., and the game will be streamed on SWAC TV, according to the university’s athletic department.
The Tigers enter the game with a 12-13 record overall and a 3-3 mark in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. They recently won back-to-back games against Prairie View A&M in a SWAC series. The teams previously met in early March, with New Orleans earning an 11-6 victory in that contest.
Jackson State wrapped up an eight-game road trip last week in Starkville against Mississippi State. The trip covered more than 6,900 miles. The team’s coach, Omar Johnson, recently participated in USA Baseball’s 2025 Collegiate National Team Training Camp, leading a staff divided into Stars and Stripes for the series held in North Carolina. Following camp, Johnson led Team USA at the 45th USA vs. Japan Collegiate All-Star Series in Japan, according to the university.
Junior shortstop Diego Melendez is among 100 players on the 2026 watch list for the Brooks Wallace Award, which honors the top shortstop in college baseball. The award will be presented later this year and is named after former Texas Tech player Brooks Wallace.
Johnson earned his 600th career victory with a win over Mississippi Valley State, now totaling 605 wins at Jackson State, trailing only Robert “Bob” Braddy, who finished his career with 823 wins. The team also features transfers from New Orleans, including Jayden Lopez and Payton Chace Boines. Lopez has a 3-1 record this season, while Boines is batting .349 overall.
New Orleans defeated Jackson State 11-6 in their meeting earlier this season on March 3 in New Orleans. Fans can follow Jackson State athletics on social media at @GoJSUTigers on Twitter and Instagram, on Facebook as Jackson State Tigers, or visit GoJSUTigers.com for updates.
