Jackson State Falls to Alabama State in Softball
Montgomery, Ala. — Jackson State’s softball team lost 4-0 to Alabama State on Saturday afternoon, despite a resilient effort both offensively and in the circle. The Tigers outhit the Hornets 6-4 but left too many runners on base and committed defensive errors that contributed to the defeat.
Jackson State (18-15, 10-3 SWAC) started strong, with Ka’Liyah Gipson leading off with a single and stealing second base. Ariana Murillo followed with a walk, putting two runners on with no outs. However, Alabama State escaped the jam, a recurring theme in the game.
The Hornets (14-26, 8-6 SWAC) took advantage of defensive miscues to score an unearned run in the first inning. They added two runs in the third, including an RBI double from Jaibriel Terrell, and extended their lead to four in the fifth. Three of Alabama State’s runs were unearned.
Jackson State left six runners on base and was unable to deliver a clutch hit. Despite the offensive struggles, Brooklyn Morris pitched a complete game, allowing only four hits and one earned run over six innings. The Tigers’ defense committed five errors, which proved costly.
Alabama State’s Kohana Pousson pitched a complete-game shutout, limiting Jackson State’s offense. The Tigers will look to bounce back Tuesday when they visit Alcorn State for a 5 p.m. game.
