Jackson State edges Alcorn State 13-8 with key innings

Jackson State used a five-run third inning to secure a 13-8 non-conference win over Alcorn State on Friday night at Braddy Field. The Tigers, now 6-4, have won three consecutive games and five of their last six.

The Tigers took an early lead, highlighted by a two-run double from Payton Boines that sparked a five-run third inning. Jackson State led 6-0 before Alcorn State chipped away, narrowing the gap to 6-3 in the fifth inning. The Tigers responded with four runs in the bottom half, including steals of three bases, to extend their lead to 10-3.

Jackson State added three more runs in the seventh, with RBI doubles and groundouts, pushing the score to 13-4. Alcorn State scored four in the ninth inning, but the Tigers held on for the victory. Robert Tate Jr. led at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Diego Melendez went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Boines finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Tyshon Patty also contributed two RBIs and two hits.

On the mound, Kade Walker started for Jackson State, pitching four innings, allowing two runs on three hits with four strikeouts. Relief pitchers Manuel Toro, Christian Delgado, and Kevin De Los Santos combined for four innings, allowing five runs on seven hits. Talmadge Davis closed the game in the ninth, allowing one run on one hit with a strikeout.

Jackson State returns to action Saturday with two games: against Mississippi Valley State at 3 p.m. and UNC Asheville at 6 p.m., at Braddy Field.
