Jackson State Defeats Grambling State 61-55 Behind Cotton’s 15 Points
Jackson, Miss. — The Jackson State women’s basketball team limited Grambling State to just 13.3 percent from three-point range in a 61-55 victory Saturday at home. The Tigers forced their opponents into 15 three-point attempts, making only two, according to team sources.
Jackson State had three players score in double figures. Jaileyah Cotton led the way with 15 points and two steals. Pierre-Noelle Tcheuhchoua added 10 points, six rebounds, and two steals off the bench, while Mikayla Brown also scored 10 points with six rebounds. The Tigers outrebounded Grambling 40-27, with Jada Patton grabbing eight boards.
The team also pulled down 13 offensive rebounds and scored 11 second-chance points. Defensively, JSU held Grambling to 37 percent shooting from the field and 13.3 percent from beyond the arc. The Tigers finished with eight offensive rebounds and nine second-chance points, while defensive rebounds totaled 27.
Jackson State (6-15, 4-5 SWAC) opened the game with a 5-0 run, ending with a three from Derrica McCall. The Lady Tigers trailed 17-14 after the first quarter. They trimmed the deficit to 22-21 in the second, then took a 26-22 lead before heading into halftime ahead 37-30.
In the third quarter, Jackson State maintained its lead, going into the final frame with a 47-43 advantage. Grambling State tied it at 55-55 late in the game, but Jackson State responded with a 6-0 run, sealing the win with four seconds remaining.
The Tigers capitalized on three Grambling turnovers in the fourth quarter, scoring six points off those mistakes. They finished with 24 points in the paint, 18 fast-break points, and 17 bench points. The team also scored 16 points off 19 GSU turnovers and 11 second-chance points.
