Jackson State beats Texas Southern 94-89 behind Ruffin’s double-double

Jackson, Miss. — Daeshun Ruffin recorded his third consecutive double-double with 25 points and 16 assists, leading Jackson State to a 94-89 victory over Texas Southern on Monday night at the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center. Ruffin shot 8-of-17 from the floor and made 6 of 8 free throws, marking his third straight double-double in conference play.

Dorian McMillian added 25 points for Jackson State, shooting 7-of-12 overall, including four three-pointers, and was 7-of-8 at the free-throw line. Dionjahe Thomas posted his second consecutive double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds, converting 8-of-12 shots and making his first three-pointer of the season. Raevon Thomas chipped in 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Jayme Mitchell Jr. scored 11 points with five rebounds.

The Tigers shot 53.4% from the field (31-of-58) and 38.1% from beyond the arc (8-of-21). They also went 24-of-28 at the free throw line, finishing with an 85.7% free-throw percentage. Texas Southern was held to 49.2% shooting (32-of-65) and 28.6% from three-point range (8-of-28). The Tigers made 70.8% of their free throws (17-of-24).

Bryce Roberts led Texas Southern with 26 points, while Troy Hupstead added a double-double with 23 points and 15 rebounds. The game featured a close start, with Texas Southern trailing just 14 seconds in and being tied for only 1 minute and 14 seconds overall. Jackson State assisted on 20 of its 31 baskets.
