Jackson State Beats Bethune-Cookman 10-3 in Softball Series Opener

Jackson State opened its softball series against Bethune-Cookman with a 10-3 victory Friday at home in Jackson, Mississippi.

Jace Jackson led the Tigers offensively, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs. She also drove in four runs, helping Jackson State overcome an early 1-0 deficit. Beija Allen contributed with a home run and three RBIs, while Ka’Liyah Gipson added three hits and an RBI.

The Tigers scored their first run in the bottom of the first inning on Jackson’s RBI double. Jackson State then took the lead in the second inning, scoring four runs highlighted by Jackson’s two-run double and a two-run single from Mackenzie Barney. The Wildcats responded, trimming the deficit to 4-3, but the Tigers added a run in the fourth to make it 5-3.

Jackson State broke the game open in the sixth inning, scoring four runs, including a three-run home run by Allen. The Tigers maintained control for the remainder of the game, with their offense totaling 14 hits compared to Bethune-Cookman’s nine. Gipson also stole two bases in the game.

Jorgina Gant pitched for Jackson State, limiting Bethune-Cookman to a 2-for-10 clip with runners in scoring position. She faced 30 Wildcats hitters, striking out four and giving up 10 runs in six innings. Offensively, Emma Bradley-Tse led Bethune-Cookman, going 2-for-4 with a triple.

The series continues Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
