Houston Christian Wins Series With 9-2 Victory Over Alcorn
HOUSTON — Houston Christian claimed a 9-2 victory over Alcorn State on Saturday afternoon at Husky Field, earning the series win in non-conference baseball action. The Huskies, now 2-5, had five players with multiple hits in the game.
Jeremy Rader led off the bottom of the first inning with a single and later scored on an error charged to the Alcorn infield. A double play kept the Huskies ahead, and Jack Walker came home in the same inning to give Houston Christian a 2-0 lead.
Alcorn evened the score in the third inning. Adrian Vallescorbo sparked a rally with an infield single, and Rayfield Adams III followed with a double to drive in a run. Kanious Davis added an RBI single, tying the game at 2-2.
Houston Christian regained the lead in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Walker, scoring Tyree Jackson. The Huskies extended their lead with four runs in the fifth, highlighted by Nico Defazio’s two-run single. Alcorn reliever Jose Cherena issued back-to-back bases-loaded walks, pushing the score to 7-2.
A bases-loaded walk in the sixth and a Graham Laxton RBI single in the eighth finalized the 9-2 score. Levi Castilleja came in to score the final run.
David Lopez earned the win for Houston Christian, working nine strikeouts over four innings and giving up two runs on four hits. The loss went to Alcorn’s Jacob Wingard, who allowed six runs in 4.1 innings. Hayden Konkler pitched 1.2 innings of hitless relief for the Huskies.
At the plate, Defazio went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored. Davis was 1-for-2 with an RBI for Alcorn, and Adams added an RBI and a run scored.
