Hinds Softball Sweeps Bossier Parish in Doubleheader

RAYMOND, Miss. — The Hinds Community College softball team swept Bossier Parish Community College in a doubleheader Saturday at Rene T. Warren Field.

In the first game, freshman Claire Mellard pitched eight innings to earn her eighth win of the season. She limited Bossier Parish to one run on eight hits, with one walk, in a 2-1 extra-inning victory. Mellard kept the Lady Cavaliers at bay after they took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. She stranded runners in scoring position and kept the game tied through seven innings.

The Lady Eagles tied the game in the sixth inning. Freshman LaKeitha Sampson led off with a double, and Emma Hudson’s groundout scored her to make it 1-1. The game went to an international tiebreaker in the eighth, where Mellard escaped a threat with a popout and strikeout. In the bottom half, pinch runner Aaliyah Nixon advanced to third on a bunt and scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly from Jalia McDaniel.

In the second game, freshman Abby McLean tossed a complete-game shutout. She allowed just two hits, struck out six, and carried a no-hitter through four innings. The Lady Eagles scored twice, with key hits from Jada Ellis and McDaniel, who hit an RBI triple in the sixth.

McLean responded to a leadoff double in the seventh with a strikeout and flyout to secure the victory. The sweep improves Hinds’ record and extends their winning streak.

The Lady Eagles will host Baton Rouge Community College on Tuesday at 2 and 4 p.m. at Rene T. Warren Field to conclude their 12-game homestand. For updates, follow @HindsAthletics on Twitter and Instagram, and like their Facebook page.
