Hinds Softball Sweeps Baton Rouge with 26 Hits in Doubleheader
The Hinds Community College softball team extended its winning streak to five games Tuesday with a doubleheader sweep of Baton Rouge. The Lady Eagles combined for 18 runs on 26 hits, including eight extra-base hits, in the two games.
In Game One, Jalia McDaniel led the offense, going 3-for-3 and hitting a home run in the first inning. Emma Hudson added a double and scored on Alyx Hall’s two-run blast. McDaniel, Mackenzie Smith, Abby McLean, and Adyson McKnight each contributed RBI singles, fueling a five-run second inning. Claire Mellard pitched a complete game, allowing five runs on six hits with five strikeouts to earn her third win of the season.
Game Two saw Hinds jump out early. McDaniel was hit by a pitch and scored, with Hudson hitting her second home run of the season. Baton Rouge responded with four runs in the third but Hinds rallied. McDaniel’s sacrifice fly tied the game, and Abby McLean hit her first home run of the season in the fourth. The Eagles scored again in the fifth on LaKeitha Sampson’s single and Smith’s home run. RBI singles from Galloway and McDaniel in the seventh added insurance.
The pitching staff combined for a resilient effort. Jazmin Robertson started, allowing four runs in two innings. Laicie Bridges pitched two innings of relief, and Mattie Gibson finished with a scoreless fifth. McLean also pitched efficiently, facing seven batters and allowing just one baserunner. Hinds will next compete in the Coyote Classic in Gulf Shores, Alabama, before returning home for their season opener at Rene T. Warren Field.
