Hinds Community College Athletes Earn Postseason Honors in Basketball and Track
Raymond, Miss. — Hinds Community College celebrated two athletes this week for their achievements in postseason competition. Men’s basketball player Daveon Henry and track and field sprinter Jayval Wright earned major honors after impressive performances.
Henry, a sophomore guard from Yazoo City, led the Bulldogs in the Region 23 Tournament. He scored 19 points in the opening game against Holmes and followed with a career-high 43 points in a victory over Mississippi Gulf Coast in overtime. His leadership and ability to take over games helped Hinds advance, earning him recognition as one of the region’s top performers of the week, according to school officials.
On the national level, Wright made history by being named the 2026 NJCAA National Men’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Year. He secured the title with a national championship in the 200-meter dash (20.62 seconds) and a runner-up finish in the 60-meter dash (6.61 seconds). Wright currently holds the fastest 60-meter time in the NJCAA this season and ranks third all-time in the 200-meter in NJCAA history. His season of elite speed and consistency cements his status as one of the top sprinters in the nation.
