Greenville and MUW men’s basketball game goes to overtime in high-scoring thriller
GREENVILLE, Ill. — The W men’s basketball team lost to Greenville University 141-137 in overtime Thursday at H.J. Long Gymnasium. The game was one of five in program history where The W scored over 100 points, all against Greenville, and it ranks second in team history for total points scored in a game, according to school records.
The game featured high-octane offense from both teams, with a combined 278 points, 106 made field goals, and 195 attempted. Greenville shot 18-of-53 from three-point range, with all but one miss coming from the Panthers. The teams combined to make 48 of 62 free throws, and there were 95 rebounds, 65 assists, 12 blocked shots, and 16 steals.
There were 15 ties and 16 lead changes during the contest. Eleven players scored in double figures, led by The W’s Tray Huguley with 43 points. Huguley made 20 of 24 shots and added 13 rebounds for his 11th double-double of the season and 16th consecutive game in double figures.
Junior guard Devin McCaine scored a career-high 35 points, making 16 of 22 shots. He also dished out nine assists and grabbed three rebounds. Tyler Shephard added 24 points, while Joe Haze Austin contributed 16. Austin also had six rebounds, four steals, and four blocks. Senior Trent Walker posted nine points, eight rebounds, and six assists. Other scorers included Ayden McDeavitt with seven points and Mal Stansfield with three.
MUW head coach Dean Burrows praised his team’s effort, emphasizing the importance of free throws and rebounding. “Another gutsy performance for this group,” he said. “We have to stop beating ourselves and learn to move on if and when something doesn’t go our way. We won’t reach our potential until we do.”
The Owls will try to break a two-game SLIAC losing streak Saturday against Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky.
