Delta State Women’s Tennis Tops Montevallo 5-2

CLEVELAND, Miss. — Delta State University’s women’s tennis team earned a 5-2 win over Montevallo on Friday at Cleveland Country Club. The Lady Statesmen won five singles matches after dropping the doubles point to the Falcons.

Montevallo claimed the doubles point by taking two of three matches. Delta State’s only doubles win came at No. 2, where Anastasiia Iakovlieva and Trinity Ly defeated their opponents 6-1. The Falcons secured wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, giving them an early 1-0 lead.

The Lady Statesmen responded strongly in singles, winning five of six matches. At No. 1, Amelia Ciesielczyk won the first set before her opponent retired, tying the match at 1-1. Trinity Ly won at No. 2 in straight sets, including a tiebreak in the first. Yasmina Mayer rallied after losing the first set to win by retirement in the third at No. 3.

Iakovlieva delivered a dominant performance at No. 4, winning 6-0, 6-2. Lena Kuehn finished the scoring with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 6. Montevallo’s only singles point came at No. 5.

With the victory, Delta State improved to 11-7 overall and 2-5 in conference play. The Lady Statesmen are scheduled to host West Alabama for Senior Day at 2 p.m. Monday at Cleveland Country Club.
