Delta State Women’s Tennis Defeats Western New Mexico to Stay Perfect in Spring Opener
RICHARDSON, Texas — The Delta State University women’s tennis team continued its strong start to the 2026 season with a 4-0 victory over Western New Mexico on Friday at the UTD Tennis Complex. The Lady Statesmen won the doubles point convincingly before securing three straight-set singles wins to clinch the team victory.
Delta State took early control, highlighted by a dominant performance on court one. Amelia Ciesielczyk and Trinity Ly defeated Josefina Bailetti and Lucia Carmena 6-1. At No. 2 doubles, Anastasi Iakovlieva and Yasmina Mayer earned a 6-0 win against Eva Guta and Xaviera Melgar, sealing the doubles point for the Lady Statesmen. The No. 3 doubles match was not played, as Western New Mexico did not field a full team.
The team closed out the match with strong singles performances. Mayer won at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-1, over Melgar. Lena Kuehn added a straight-set victory at No. 5, defeating Sofija Krstic 6-1, 6-1. The match was officially clinched when Western New Mexico forfeited at No. 6 singles, as the Mustangs could not field a player for that court. The remaining singles matches at courts 1, 2, and 4 remained unfinished.
The Lady Statesmen continue their early-season momentum and will play their final Texas match Sunday at 10 a.m. against the University of Texas Permian Basin at the UTD Tennis Complex.
