Delta State Women’s Tennis Beats Tuskegee 4-3
The Delta State University women’s tennis team improved to 8-6 with a 4-3 victory over Tuskegee on Saturday at the Pepsico Tennis Courts. The Lady Statesmen secured the win with a doubles sweep and three singles victories.
Delta State took the early lead by winning both doubles matches. Amelia Ciesielczyk and Yasmina Mayer defeated their opponents 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, while Anastasi Iakovlieva and Trinity Ly won 6-1 at No. 2 doubles, giving the team the opening point.
Tuskegee responded in singles play, taking the No. 1 match in three sets. Delta State regained the lead when Yasmina Mayer won in straight sets at No. 3. Lena Kuehn then extended the lead after her opponent retired during the second set at No. 5.
The Golden Tigers narrowed the gap with wins at No. 2 and No. 6 singles. However, Iakovlieva clinched the match for Delta State with a 6-4, 7-5 victory at No. 4 singles, sealing the team’s victory.
Delta State is scheduled to return to Gulf South Conference play next week against Christian Brothers on Tuesday morning.
