Delta State Women’s Basketball Looks to Extend Win Streak on Alabama Road Trip
The Delta State University Lady Statesmen Women’s Basketball team will travel to Alabama for two Gulf South Conference games this weekend, seeking to extend their three-game winning streak.
On Thursday, the team faces UAH in Huntsville at 5:30 p.m., followed by a matchup against West Alabama in Livingston at 2 p.m. Voice of the Statesmen Michael Gross will broadcast both games, with pregame shows starting about 30 minutes before tipoff.
The Lady Statesmen (11-8, 9-5 GSC) are coming off consecutive wins last week, defeating Auburn Montgomery 81-62 and Montevallo 57-49. They have been notably strong on defense, leading the conference by allowing an average of 58.9 points per game.
Jariyah Williamson leads Delta State in scoring, averaging 10.3 points per game, and is the team’s second-leading rebounder with 5.1 boards per game. Dakiya Toney has been a key presence in the frontcourt, averaging 6.9 rebounds and recording two double-doubles last week, including 18 points and 13 rebounds against AUM.
In the win against AUM, Alyse Holliman contributed 16 points and six rebounds off the bench. The team aims to build on recent success as they prepare for games against UAH and West Alabama.
UAH (19-4, 14-1 GSC) remains atop the conference standings despite suffering their first loss last week, falling 62-58 at Lee. The Chargers are averaging a margin of victory of 15.5 points and are led by Lilli Wilken, the conference’s top scorer with 21.7 points per game. Wilken posted a double-double last week with 25 points and 15 rebounds against Trevecca Nazarene.
West Alabama (9-9, 7-8 GSC) enters the weekend after a narrow 84-80 loss to Lee. The Tigers excel defensively, holding opponents to 27.1% shooting beyond the arc. Bellah Machen is their leading scorer at 16.6 points per game and is known for her defensive impact, with 26 steals this season. Haley Nichols is a key frontcourt player, averaging nearly a double-double with 13.1 points and 9.1 rebounds per game.
