Delta State women’s basketball completes season sweep of Union

Jackson, Tenn. — The Delta State University women’s basketball team secured a key road win Tuesday, beating Union University 80-77 at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. The victory marked the Lady Statesmen’s first season sweep of the Lady Bulldogs since the 2013-14 season, according to school officials.

Delta State trailed by double digits in the second half but rallied in the fourth quarter, outscoring Union 23-10 over the final 10 minutes. The team’s pace and depth proved decisive, as they outscored Union in fast-break points 22-9 and bench points 39-22. The Lady Bulldogs committed 16 turnovers, which Delta State capitalized on late in the game.

Kennedee Shelton led the Lady Statesmen with 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Four Delta State players finished in double figures. Madi Kate Vuncannon scored 12 points, including four three-pointers, while Anna Cera added 11 points and four assists. Daniela Gintere contributed nine points off the bench, helping spark the late-game surge.

Union, which dropped to 16-8 overall and 11-5 in Gulf South Conference play, was led by Olivia Lee’s 24 points. Abigail Bryan and Aubrey Sorrells each scored 15 points. Despite shooting efficiently for much of the game, Union was limited to just three field goals in the final quarter as Delta State’s defense tightened late.

The victory improves Delta State’s standing in the conference heading into the final stretch of the season, and it marks a significant milestone with the team’s first sweep of Union in nearly a decade.
