Delta State splits doubleheader, secures series at Trevecca
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Delta State University baseball team split a doubleheader Saturday at Trevecca Nazarene University, winning one game and losing the other. The results gave the Statesmen a 2-1 series victory and strengthened their position in the Gulf South Conference standings.
In the opener, Delta State edged Trevecca, 5-4. The Statesmen fell behind early but responded in the second inning when Cade Greer hit a triple and scored on an RBI groundout by Austin Batts. Batts drove in another run in the fourth with a double, giving Delta State a 2-1 lead.
The Trojans briefly took the lead in the fifth but Delta State answered immediately. Levi Lang led off the sixth with a double, and after a walk to Batts, Cooper Walls hit a two-run double to put the Statesmen ahead again. Lang added an RBI groundout in the seventh. Blake King pitched 4 1/3 innings, and Ryan Herbison threw 2 2/3 innings of one-run relief. Dawson Muenzenmay earned a two-inning save to seal the win.
The second game saw Trevecca prevail 5-3. The Trojans scored twice in the first inning, but Delta State responded in the fourth with a single by Levi Lang and a two-run home run from Stone Collier, tying the game. In the fifth, Austin Estes doubled and scored on a single by Tucker Jones, giving the Statesmen their first lead of the game.
Trevecca regained momentum in the sixth with a bunt RBI and a two-run homer by Isaac Whitaker. Despite threatening in the seventh, Delta State could not score again, and the Trojans held on for the win. Mason Shropshire pitched five innings with three strikeouts, and Aidan McCrady finished the game.
The Statesmen, now 23-16 overall and 16-11 in conference play, will continue their road trip next weekend with a series at Auburn Montgomery.
