Delta State Softball Sweeps Henderson State Behind Strong Pitching and Clutch Hitting
CLEVELAND, Miss. — Delta State softball swept Henderson State in a doubleheader Wednesday at University Field. The Lady Statesmen relied on strong pitching and timely hitting to secure a 4-2 victory in Game 1 and an 8-0 run-rule win in Game 2.
In the first game, Maeve Lavoy pitched all seven innings, allowing 10 hits and two runs while striking out two. She improved to 3–1 this season. Offensively, Kyleigh Wheaton led with a 2-for-3 effort, including two doubles and two RBIs. Her double in the third inning put Delta State ahead 1–0. Carly Dunigan and Ally Agner also contributed RBIs, with Agner adding two hits and a stolen base. Joryie McKnight scored twice and had two hits, including a leadoff single that sparked a two-run third inning. The Lady Statesmen finished with seven hits and committed no errors.
In Game 2, Kendal Moore pitched five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out two to earn the win. The Lady Statesmen’s offense exploded for 13 hits, scoring in three consecutive innings to end the game early via run rule at 8–0. Carly Dunigan had a standout performance, going 3-for-4 with five RBIs, including a two-run single in the third and a two-run double in the fourth. Mary Teague added a 3-for-3 effort with an RBI, and Kyleigh Wheaton went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Rylie Leonard also contributed two hits and scored twice. Delta State’s five-run fourth inning, highlighted by Dunigan’s double and a bases-loaded walk by Hallie Turner, sealed the victory.
Both Delta State pitchers allowed just two runs combined over 12 innings. The Lady Statesmen finished the doubleheader with six RBIs from Dunigan and three doubles from Wheaton. The team committed no errors in either game. Delta State returns to action Friday with a three-game series against Christian Brothers University, starting with a doubleheader at 3 p.m. (CT).
