Delta State Softball Sweeps Christian Brothers in GSC Doubleheader

CLEVELAND, Miss. — The Delta State University softball team delivered its most complete performance of the season, sweeping Christian Brothers University in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader at University Field. The Lady Statesmen won 9-1 in six innings and 11-7 on Friday, boosting their record to 8-13 overall and 4-4 in conference play.

In the first game, Maeve Lavoy pitched a complete-game six-hitter with six strikeouts and one walk. She faced 27 batters and allowed only one run, setting the tone early. Delta State jumped out to an early lead with a four-run second inning, highlighted by RBI hits from Hallie Turner and Ally Agner, along with an unearned run. Joryie McKnight went 3-for-4, scoring twice and driving in one run. Carly Dunigan, Agner, and Lavoy each added two hits as the Lady Statesmen totaled 13 hits. The game ended early via run rule after Rebecca Martinez’s RBI single in the sixth.

The second game was a high-scoring affair, with CBU rallying for seven runs in the fourth to take a 7-6 lead. Delta State responded with a five-run surge across the fourth and sixth innings to secure the victory. Calli McConnell led the offense, going 2-for-3 with a double and four RBIs, including a two-run double in the fourth. Kyleigh Wheaton scored three times and added two hits. Mary Teague and Carly Dunigan also contributed multiple hits. The Lady Statesmen finished with 12 hits and capitalized on six CBU errors. In the circle, Averi Bridgman earned her first win of the season in relief, while Maeve Lavoy closed with three scoreless innings and three strikeouts.

Delta State aims to complete the series sweep Sunday at 1 p.m. (CT) at University Field.
