Delta State Softball Looks to Turn Tide in Crucial Series at Trevecca Nazarene
The Delta State University softball team will face Trevecca Nazarene in a three-game series this weekend in Nashville, as part of Gulf South Conference play. The series begins Saturday with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. CT, followed by a final game on Saturday afternoon at the Trevecca Softball Complex, according to school officials.
Delta State enters the series with a 12-26 record overall and a 6-15 mark in conference play. The Trojans are 12-13 overall and 8-13 in GSC games, currently in eighth place in the standings. Trevecca Nazarene is seeking to strengthen its postseason hopes with the series, which will be the first time the Lady Statesmen have played at Trevecca Nazarene since 2014, the program said.
The Lady Statesmen aim to snap a five-game losing streak. Leading the offense is junior utility player Kyleigh Wheaton, who has a batting average of .407 with 35 RBIs, nine home runs, and 12 extra-base hits. Junior outfielder Carly Dunigan also contributes significantly with a .367 average, six home runs, and 27 RBIs. In the circle, senior Maeve Lavoy has pitched 98.1 innings with a 6-8 record, a save, and 69 strikeouts. She is also batting .373 with 22 hits and 10 runs scored this season.
Trevecca Nazarene has been led by sophomore infielder Shay Hollingsworth, who sports a .404 batting average with 36 hits, seven doubles, and 14 RBIs. Freshman pitcher Bailey Goad has started 14 games, posting a 3.49 ERA, with 74 strikeouts in 97.2 innings pitched. Goad recently struck out 18 batters over 13 innings in two appearances against West Alabama last weekend, the school said.
