Delta State softball drops doubleheader to UAH in Huntsville
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The Delta State University softball team lost both games of a Gulf South Conference doubleheader to Alabama Huntsville on Friday at Les Stuedeman. The Chargers won 14-6 and 13-4.
In game one, Delta State jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the first inning, highlighted by RBI hits from Kyleigh Wheaton and Ally Agner. UAH responded quickly, scoring four runs in the second inning, including a two-run home run from Brittany Slaten. The Chargers extended their lead with runs in the fourth and fifth innings and added four more in the sixth to secure the win.
The Statesmen finished with 11 hits in the opener. Carly Dunigan and Wheaton each had two hits. Agner contributed two doubles and an RBI, while Dunigan drove in a run and scored twice.
In game two, UAH again scored early, putting up four runs in the first inning and six more in the second. Delta State responded with a two-run double from Maya Mills and three runs in the fourth inning, including an RBI double from Wheaton. Mills, Lavoy, and Wheaton each recorded doubles during the rally.
Despite the offensive efforts, UAH’s bats remained hot, finishing with 15 hits in the second game. Mills led Delta State with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Wheaton and Calli McConnell also added doubles. The Statesmen drew seven walks but could not overcome the early deficit.
Delta State will try to rebound in the series finale against the Chargers on Saturday at 12 p.m. Central time.
