Delta State Softball Aims for Series Win at UAH in Rocket City

The Delta State University softball team heads to Alabama for a three-game series against the University of Alabama-Huntsville this weekend. The Lady Statesmen will play a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Friday, with the final game set for noon Saturday at Les Studeman Field, according to school officials.

After a slow start to the season, Delta State has gone 7-6 over its last 13 games. The team aims to regain momentum following a 1-2 series loss against West Alabama last weekend. Kyleigh Wheaton leads the team offensively with a .409 batting average, including nine doubles, nine home runs and 33 RBIs, according to team statistics.

Junior outfielder Carly Dunigan has been hot at the plate recently, going 7-for-15 with five RBIs, two home runs, and seven runs scored in five games last week. Maeve Lavoy, a senior pitcher and outfielder, has compiled a 5-4 record over 66.1 innings with a 4.22 ERA and 53 strikeouts for the Lady Statesmen.

Meanwhile, UAH enters the series after losing four straight games. The Chargers are coming off a sweep by No. 6 Auburn Montgomery last weekend. Kylie Ballentine leads UAH offensively with a .369 batting average, 13 extra-base hits, and 25 RBIs.

On the mound, sophomore pitchers Megan Shurtz and Katie Bracken have logged over 80 innings each. Bracken sports a 2.86 ERA with 111 strikeouts, while Shurtz has a 2.22 ERA with 74 strikeouts, according to team stats.
