Delta State Men’s Tennis Secures First Conference Win with 6-1 Victory
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Delta State University men’s tennis team earned its first conference victory Tuesday, defeating Christian Brothers 6-1 at the Leftwich Tennis Center. The Statesmen improved to 8-8 this season with the win.
Christian Brothers took an early lead by winning all three doubles matches, giving the Buccaneers a 1-0 advantage. Delta State’s top doubles team of Marti Cerda Castillo and Simon Ojeda lost 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. The pairs of Alejandro Bravo and Valentin Greco, and Juan Diego Alzate and Joaquin Jarochevsky, each fell 6-4 at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, respectively.
Delta State quickly turned the match around in singles play. Cerda Castillo defeated Christian Brothers’ player 7-5, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Greco secured a straight-sets win, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 2. Alzate dominated his match, winning 6-0, 6-4 at No. 3. Bravo added a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 4, while Ojeda won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5. Jarochevsky capped the sweep with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 6.
The singles wins secured the team victory for Delta State, completing a remarkable turnaround after doubles play. The team will aim to carry this momentum into its next match, hosting No. 42 Harding University Friday at the Cleveland Country Club.
