Delta State Men’s Basketball Heads to Alabama for Conference Games

The Delta State University Statesmen men’s basketball team will travel to Alabama this weekend for two conference games. On Thursday, they face UAH in Huntsville at 7:30 p.m. The following day, they play West Alabama in Livingston at 4 p.m., with radio coverage provided by the Statesmen Sports Radio Network and Michael Gross on the call.

The team aims to rebound after a 76-69 loss at home to Montevallo last Saturday. Delta State has three players averaging double-digit points this season. Redshirt junior guard Dacory Porter leads with an average of 15.9 points per game. Porter scored 16 points in the last game against Montevallo.

Junior guard Bryce Clayton, from Naples, Florida, averages 13 points per game and made six three-pointers in the last outing, including a game-high 21 points against AUM. Clayton also pulled down eight rebounds, his season high. He ranks sixth in the Gulf South Conference in three-point percentage at 38.8%.

With senior forward Je’Marion Westbrook sidelined last week, junior forward Jackson Twombly stepped into a starting role. The Frankfurt, Kentucky, native averaged 10.5 points over the past two home games. Defensively, Delta State is holding opponents to an average of 71.1 points per game, third in the conference.

Looking at UAH, the Chargers are seeking to bounce back after a narrow one-point loss to Trevecca Nazarene. They rank third in the GSC in scoring, averaging 83.8 points per game. Their offense is led by junior guard Thomas Allard and senior guard Quentin Toles. Toles leads the team with 17.3 points per game, while Allard averages 15 points.

In their last game, Toles scored 19 points with five rebounds, and senior forward Matt Thurman added a season-high 18 points but struggled with turnovers. West Alabama, the top team in the GSC, lost their second conference game last Saturday to Lee, 77-51. The Tigers are known for their stout defense, allowing just 64.2 points per game. Their backcourt is led by Rasean Frederick, averaging 12.1 points and shooting 47% from the field. Christian Thompson is the top rebounder, pulling down 10.3 boards per game while scoring nearly 10 points.
