Delta State Hosts Montevallo Falcons for Rescheduled Baseball Series

Weronika Kaczmarska, Cleveland, Miss. — The Delta State University baseball team (19-13, 13-8 Gulf South Conference) aims to extend its four-game winning streak into the upcoming GSC weekend series. The games were rescheduled from their original dates due to weather, now set for Thursday at 5 p.m. and a doubleheader on Friday starting at 1 p.m.

The Statesmen will host the University of Montevallo Falcons (17-19, 9-12 GSC) for one of the few weekend series in Cleveland this season. Michael Gross will call the games for the Statesmen Sports Network and FloCollege Network.

Delta State enters the weekend in fifth place in the GSC standings, three games behind the conference lead. The team looks to climb the rankings as the regular season approaches its final month. Tucker Jones was named Gulf South Conference Player of the Week and NCBWA South Region Player of the Week last week. He is batting .369 with 14 extra-base hits, 45 RBIs, and 22 stolen bases. Jones and Austin Batts both have an 11-game hitting streak going into the series.

Junior Adrian Byrd has been dominant on the mound, pitching 49 innings with four wins, 52 strikeouts, and a 2.39 ERA. He continues to be a key contributor for the Statesmen this season.

The Falcons have gained momentum recently, winning nine of their last 11 games, including a series victory over No. 5 West Alabama. Jack Fitzgerald leads Montevallo at the plate with a .333 batting average, eight home runs, and 30 RBIs. Evan Radford also provides a power bat, with eight home runs, 35 RBIs, and seven doubles in his lineup contributions.
