Delta State Hosts AUM and Montevallo in Weekend Basketball Doubleheader
Delta State University’s men’s basketball team hosts two home games this weekend, welcoming Auburn Montgomery and Montevallo to Cleveland. The Statesmen will face the Warhawks from AUM on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Walter Sillers Coliseum, followed by a Saturday matchup against Montevallo at 4 p.m.
The team is coming off a narrow 66-64 loss to Christian Brothers last Thursday in Memphis. Delta State holds a 4-8 record in Gulf South Conference play and an overall record of 7-10, according to the school.
Redshirt junior guard Dacory Porter has been a standout for the Statesmen in January, averaging 19.5 points per game and posting three 20-plus point performances, including a double-double against Lee two weeks ago. Senior forward Je’Marion Westbrook scored a team-high 21 points last Thursday, shooting 80% from the field in that game.
The Warhawks from Auburn Montgomery enter the weekend on a seven-game losing streak, with an overall record of 3-15 and a 1-11 mark in conference play. They are coming off a 95-61 loss to Lee last weekend. Senior guard Marius Canery, who has been filling in for injured top scorer Chapelle Whitney, averages 12.2 points per game and has 12 blocked shots this season.
The Montevallo Falcons, ranked as the preseason Gulf South Conference favorite, are riding a three-game winning streak. The team has a 13-6 overall record and a 9-4 conference record. Freshman guard Bryant James earned both GSC Freshman and Player of the Week honors last week, averaging 23 points on 64% shooting, including 57.9% from three-point range. Led by Birmingham native Derek Moore, who averages 19.5 points and 6.9 rebounds per game, the Falcons have been a strong offensive team this season.
