Delta State Heads to Memphis and Jackson for Gulf South Conference Games
The Delta State University men’s basketball team will hit the road for two Gulf South Conference contests this weekend. The Statesmen are 7-9 overall and 4-7 in conference play.
On Thursday at 7 p.m., Delta State travels to Memphis, Tennessee, to face Christian Brothers University. The following Saturday, the team will visit Jackson, Tennessee, for a matchup against Union University at 4 p.m. Michael Gross will call the games on the Statesmen Sports Radio Network, beginning with the pre-game show shortly after the women’s game concludes.
The team is looking to bounce back after a loss to Mississippi College last weekend in Clinton. Dacory Porter, Bryce Clayton and Je’Marion Westbrook lead the team in scoring, with Porter netting 14 points in the last outing. Clayton is averaging 13.1 points per game, and Westbrook scored 12 last Saturday. Porter is shooting just under 50% from the field, while Clayton is close to 40% from beyond the arc.
Christian Brothers University, with a 2-13 overall record and 1-10 in conference, is struggling this season. The Buccaneers have lost six straight games after winning on Dec. 20. Marquis Gill leads the team with over 18 points per game and averaged 27 last weekend, including a 31-point effort against Trevecca Nazarene. Gill also paces the Bucs with 36 three-pointers made and is shooting 34% from three-point range.
Union University enters the weekend with a 7-10 overall record and a 3-8 conference mark. The Bulldogs have lost six straight games since their last win on Dec. 20. Key players include Terrence Ringo Jr., who averages 17.6 points and 9.7 rebounds per game, and Jamiir Allen, who scores 10.2 points and leads the team with 48 assists and 24 steals.
