Davis Gillespie Homers Twice as Southern Miss Beats Old Dominion 10-4
Davis Gillespie homered twice and drove in three runs, helping No. 8 Southern Miss defeat Old Dominion 10-4 Thursday night at the Ellmer Family Baseball Complex in Norfolk, Virginia. The Golden Eagles, now 22-8 overall and 6-4 in Sun Belt play, scored in six different innings and recorded a season-high 15 hits.
Gillespie opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the first inning. He added a solo shot in the fifth, increasing his season total to eight home runs. Seth Smith also contributed offensively with three hits, including a double, and scored twice.
Southern Miss starter Grayden Harris earned his fifth win of the season, allowing two runs on six hits over six innings. Harris struck out six and walked one. Drey Barrett and Matthew Russo each added an RBI, with Russo hitting his fourth home run of the season. Russo also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning.
Darin Kuskie took the loss for Old Dominion, allowing five runs on 12 hits over five innings. The Monarchs dropped to 13-16 overall and 3-7 in league play. Maverick Stallings hit his fifth home run of the season for ODU, which scored four runs in total.
Old Dominion added a run in the seventh and ninth innings, but the Golden Eagles maintained control throughout the game. The series continues Friday with game two scheduled for 2 p.m. CT.
