Choctaws Set Three-Point Record in Narrow Loss to West Florida

CLINTON, Miss. — Mississippi College women’s basketball set a program single-game record with 14 three-pointers but lost 89-86 to West Florida on Thursday at A.E. Wood Coliseum.

The Choctaws (9-14, 8-10 Gulf South Conference) kept pace from beyond the arc, but UWF’s advantage in the paint and at the free-throw line proved decisive. MC placed five players in double figures for the first time this season, led by Nia Coleman with 25 points. She also recorded five steals, at least five rebounds for the third consecutive game, and a season-high five assists.

Ava Craddock added a season-high 16 points, making four of her eight attempts from three-point range. Karly Ivy scored 11 points, while Vivian Sketoe had 10 points, six assists and two steals. Brooklyn Wakefield contributed a season-high 10 points, hitting three three-pointers on four attempts.

West Florida built a seven-point lead after the first quarter, shooting 71 percent from the field to lead 28-21. Despite MC hitting four of six three-pointers in the quarter, UWF controlled the paint and scored five fast-break points. The Argonauts extended their lead in the second quarter, outscoring the Choctaws 24-13 and turning eight MC turnovers into 11 points to take a 52-34 halftime lead.

Mississippi College responded with its best offensive quarter of the season, outscoring UWF 32-7 in the third. The surge gave the Choctaws a 66-59 lead entering the final period. They made seven three-pointers, forced seven turnovers and dominated the glass in the third quarter. The 32 points in the third are the most in any quarter this season by MC, while the seven points allowed matched the fewest by an opponent in a third quarter this season.

In the final quarter, UWF capitalized on turnovers and free throws to regain control. MC shot 57 percent from the field but committed seven turnovers. The Argonauts sealed the win with 12 free throws and two clutch three-pointers in the closing minutes.

Annarose Tyre led UWF with 18 points, including 6 of 11 shooting and two three-pointers, adding three steals. Amelia Bell, returning to A.E. Wood Coliseum for the first time since March 2025, scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double. Isabel Grimes added 15 points and five assists, along with two steals.

Mississippi College returns to action Saturday at 2 p.m. for Senior Day, with festivities prior to tipoff.
