Centre tops Millsaps 80-73 in men’s basketball
JACKSON, Miss. — Centre College defeated Millsaps College 80-73 in a close men’s basketball game Friday night inside the Hangar Dome.
The Majors (12-10, 3-8 Southern Athletic Association) led early, with strong scoring in the paint. Junior Cameron Lumar led Millsaps with 16 points, including three 3-pointers and three steals. Senior Caleb Kent added 11 points and five rebounds. Junior Colt Donley scored 11 points with two assists and made four of six free throws. Classmate Rodney Phillips Jr. was perfect from the field, hitting all five of his shots to finish with 10 points.
Millsaps opened the game with an early lead, sparked by Donley’s jumper and Davion James’ quick basket. A fastbreak dunk from junior Jaxon Toney gave the Majors a 15-10 lead with 14:01 remaining in the first half. Despite multiple lead changes, Millsaps held a narrow edge at halftime, leading 39-38.
In the second half, Millsaps maintained momentum with key contributions from Phillips Jr. and Lumar. Phillips made a crucial layup at 10:51, and Lumar hit a 3-pointer at 9:37, helping to keep the game close. However, Centre responded with strong free-throw shooting and scoring runs, pulling ahead to a 42-34 lead midway through the half.
Centre ultimately pulled away to secure the victory, closing with an 80-73 final score.
