Centre College defeats Millsaps 9-4 in SAA baseball opener

Jackson, Miss. — Centre College took the opening game of its Southern Athletic Association series against Millsaps College, 9-4, Friday night at Twenty Field.

Junior Wesley Grant led Millsaps with two runs scored and two hits, including a double. He also stole a base. Sophomore Carston Williams added two hits and drove in two runs, leading the team in RBIs. Senior Layne Cross finished with three hits, providing a strong leadoff performance. Senior EJ Ousley drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and contributed defensively with three assists.

Senior John Montour pitched six innings for the Majors, recording one strikeout and one walk while throwing 80 pitches, 53 for strikes. The Colonels opened the scoring in the first inning with a leadoff home run to left field, giving them a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the first, Grant made a one-handed catch in center field to prevent the Colonels from scoring again, as Millsaps held Centre to zero hits and no runs in that inning. The Majors tied the game in the third with a pair of RBIs. Williams singled to bring Cross home, and Mason Morgan’s sacrifice fly scored Grant, making it 2-2.

Centre regained the lead in the sixth with two unearned runs. The Colonels extended their advantage with a double in the seventh and later scored on a throwing error in the eighth, pushing their lead to 8-2. Centre hit two home runs in the ninth and added another run on a throwing error, increasing their margin to 9-2.

In the bottom of the ninth, Cross singled and Grant doubled to put runners in scoring position. Ousley delivered a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing home Wall from third to cut the deficit. Williams grounded out, but Grant scored on the play, finalizing the score at 9-4.
