Campbellsville edges William Carey 7-4 in baseball game
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Campbellsville edged William Carey 7-4 in a non-conference baseball game Saturday at Milton Wheeler Field.
The Tigers took control early, scoring three runs in the first inning. Aanthony Esposito led off with a single, and Antony Gilbert hit an RBI double to left. Thomas Krueger added an RBI double, and Tyler Hummel capped the inning with an RBI single, giving Campbellsville a 3-0 lead.
Campbellsville extended its lead in the second inning. Joaquin Hernandez singled with two runners on, driving in two runs. Gilbert followed with a sacrifice fly to score Esposito, making it 5-0.
William Carey responded in the bottom of the second. Jayden Mark singled, Nic Arender drew a walk, and Hays Carley singled to center, bringing home pinch-runner Weston Wales. However, the Crusaders stranded two runners after back-to-back strikeouts.
The Tigers scored again in the fourth on Krueger’s sacrifice fly, which scored Gilbert after he singled, stole second, and advanced on an error. Carey answered in the same inning, loading the bases and scoring one run on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Ducksworth, trimming the deficit to 6-2.
Carey mounted a rally in the fifth. Opening with four straight hits, the Crusaders scored twice, with Cam Senior driving in a run. The score was 7-4, but Campbellsville limited further damage, leaving runners on second and third. The Tigers held Carey to just one hit over the last two innings to secure the win.
William Carey is scheduled to play again Tuesday, February 10, against Mississippi College in Clinton, Mississippi. The game is set for 2 p.m., according to team officials.
