Blazers Track & Field Sweeps Weekly CCS Awards
Jackson, Miss. — Belhaven University’s track and field team took home three of four weekly awards from the Collegiate Conference of the South. Kimona Haynes was named CCS Women’s Track Athlete of the Week, Yasmyne McCann earned CCS Women’s Field Athlete of the Week, and Mallory Golden was selected as CCS Rookie Field Athlete of the Week.
Haynes, a senior from Jackson, Mississippi, posted one of the top performances in the nation last weekend. She swept the 200-meter and 400-meter events at the Belhaven Invitational. Haynes finished the 200 in 24.26 seconds, a personal best, in a field of 18 competitors. She then won the 400 in 55.06 seconds against 21 runners. Both times are the fastest in NCAA Division III this season, according to the school.
McCann, a sophomore, continued her strong outdoor season with a personal-best long jump of 5.13 meters (16 feet, 10 inches). She finished fifth out of 19 competitors, improving her previous season-best by 0.30 meters. Her jump ranks among the top performances in the conference early in the outdoor season.
Golden, a freshman, matched her outdoor personal best in the high jump by clearing 1.50 meters (4 feet, 11 inches). She tied for fifth place in a field of nine competitors. She had previously achieved this mark earlier in the season.
The Blazers’ next meet is scheduled for Thursday, April 2, at their home track. Fans can follow updates on Twitter and Instagram at @BelhavenBlazers or like the team on Facebook. Supporters are also encouraged to contribute through Team Green Giving.
