Belhaven Track and Field Competes at Samford Open
The Belhaven men’s and women’s track and field teams returned to competition Saturday at the Samford Open in Birmingham, Alabama, marking their second indoor meet of the season.
On the men’s side, freshman Seth Haynes led the Blazers in the 60 meters, finishing in 7.44 seconds. Juniors Neveah Matthews and Jonah Moore both achieved personal bests, with Matthews improving to 7.81 seconds and Moore lowering his time from 8.04 to 7.97 seconds. In the 200 meters, freshman Kenneth Mills posted a personal best of 23.36 seconds, while Jaheem Cook finished in 25.47 seconds.
Belhaven’s men also saw strong performances in the 400 meters, with Julius Phillips clocking 51.61 seconds and Leeson Taylor III finishing in 52.96 seconds. In the 800 meters, Jacob Turner recorded a personal-best 2:13.32, shaving nearly a second off his previous best. Senior Drew Duckworth improved his mile time to 5:00.24, a notable jump from his 5:42.61 run on Friday, with Donovan Hurst finishing in 5:18.00.
The women’s team saw freshman Brycelyn Townsend compete in the 60 meters, finishing in 8.47 seconds, and later posting a 28.36 in the 200 meters, with Yasmine McCann running a 28.29. The 400 meters featured a standout performance by senior Kimona Haynes, who ran a 59.75, surpassing her previous split and ranking among the top Division III times this season. Courtney Adams completed the event in 1:09.01.
In field events, freshman Mallory Golden continued to impress in the high jump, clearing 1.55 meters — a personal best and nationally ranked mark, improving from 1.51 meters. On the men’s side, Alex Reed posted a long jump of 5.81 meters. The Blazers are scheduled to finish their weekend in Birmingham at the KMS Open on Sunday, with the first event starting at 8 a.m.
