Belhaven Softball Extends Winning Streak at The Spring Games
BARTOW, Fla. — The No. 23-ranked Belhaven Softball team added two victories Thursday at The Spring Games, extending its winning streak to four games at the event.
The Blazers defeated No. 16 Case Western Reserve 9-5 before narrowly beating Wittenberg 4-3 in a tight contest.
In the first game, Belhaven overcame an early deficit to top the Spartans. Case Western Reserve scored twice in the top of the first inning. Belhaven responded in the bottom half, with Kaleigh Steverson driving in a run to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Blazers took control in the second inning with a six-run rally. Melissa Lopera started with a walk, and after a series of hits and a wild pitch, Belhaven led 7-2. The team added two more runs in the fourth to extend the lead to 9-4, then held on as Case Western Reserve scored once in the seventh.
Lopera finished with three runs scored and two hits, while Steverson and Maryanna Guy drove in multiple runs. Karley Rouse earned the win in the circle, allowing two earned runs across five innings with five strikeouts.
The second game saw Belhaven jump ahead early, scoring three runs in the first inning. Wittenberg responded with three runs over the next two innings to tie the game. In the sixth, Emma Moore’s sacrifice fly brought home the go-ahead run for the Blazers.
Relief pitcher Laura Beth Nesmith held Wittenberg scoreless in the final four innings, earning the win. Guy and Harbour each had two hits, contributing to a 10-hit team effort.
Belhaven is scheduled to finish its run at The Spring Games Saturday with games against SUNY Fredonia and Marietta, starting at 11:15 a.m. CST.
