Belhaven Men’s Basketball Falls at Asbury in Road Game

WILMORE, Ky. — Belhaven University’s men’s basketball team was defeated 93-63 by Asbury University at the Luce Center on Thursday night. The Eagles shot 56.5% from the field and connected on 16 three-pointers, dominating the game’s pace.

The Blazers (10-12, 4-5 CCS) started strong, with Dyllion Redmond and CJ Minton scoring early to give Belhaven a 5-2 lead. Both teams exchanged baskets before Asbury found its rhythm from beyond the arc. Cam Jones hit a three to tie the game at 5-5, and Jonathan Combs followed with a three and a fast-break layup, sparking a 10-0 run that put the Eagles ahead 12-5.

Asbury extended its lead with inside plays from Lual Ayiei and perimeter shooting from Jordan Lewis and Indred Whitaker. Belhaven responded midway through the first half, with Redmond, Charleston Wallace, and Minton trimming the deficit to 22-19. The Eagles closed the half on a 18-11 run, taking a 40-30 advantage into halftime.

Belhaven opened the second half with a three from Redmond and back-to-back threes from Minton, cutting the deficit to 45-39. However, Asbury answered each challenge. Combs hit another three, and Ayiei contributed with a dunk and a block, helping push the lead back into double digits. Cam Jones’s three at 16:26 extended the margin to 50-39.

The Eagles’ decisive stretch came midway through the second half, when consecutive threes from Konlin Brown and Whitaker, along with inside finishes from Ayiei and Lewis, fueled a 13-4 run that put the game out of reach. Despite Belhaven’s efforts inside, including multiple putbacks and a dunk from Neal Terry, Asbury finished strong with a late three from Brown and a 12-3 run to close the game.

Asbury shot 70.4% in the second half and secured the win with a dominant 93-63 final score. The Blazers will play their final regular-season road game Saturday at Piedmont, with tipoff scheduled for 3 p.m.
