Belhaven Baseball Tops Millsaps 12-1 in Cowboy Maloney Series

The Belhaven Baseball team, ranked No. 19, defeated Millsaps 12-1 Tuesday night at Trustmark Park. The win improves Belhaven’s record to 18-7 and ties the series at one game each, with a final matchup scheduled later this month.

Belhaven jumped out to an early lead, scoring 11 runs in the first inning. Blake McCarthy was hit by a pitch to start the game, then advanced on a single and a walk to load the bases. Hayden Roberts delivered a two-run single, and a double steal added another run. The inning continued with RBI singles from JD Weed and Austin Canale, plus a bases-loaded walk, pushing the lead to 11-0.

The Blazers added another run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Nick Thornton. On the mound, Caleb Johnson pitched five scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and navigating traffic with efficiency. Cole Covington allowed a run in the sixth but kept the damage minimal. Gavin Brint finished the game with a clean inning, striking out two batters.

Belhaven finished with seven hits, drawing five walks and getting hit four times. Roberts led offensively with two hits and three RBIs. Thornton drove in three runs and scored twice. Canale added two RBIs, and Weed contributed two hits.

The team will next face Covenant in a three-game series starting Friday in Lookout Mountain, Georgia. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m., according to the school.
