Belhaven Baseball finishes 2-1 at Berry Invitational

Mount Berry, Ga. — The Belhaven University baseball team went 2-1 at the Berry Invitational over the weekend. The No. 4-ranked Blazers lost to SUNY Cortland in their opener but rallied to beat Marietta College in the nightcap, according to school officials.

In the first game, Cortland defeated Belhaven 13-2. The Red Dragons took an early lead with a run in the third inning and added a two-run homer in the sixth. Cortland pulled away in the seventh with eight runs, stretching its lead to 13-2. Belhaven starter Gunner Staten pitched 5.1 innings, allowing two earned runs, and the team finished with four hits.

Belhaven responded in the second game with a 7-6 victory over Marietta. The Blazers scored first with a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Marietta took a 4-1 lead before Belhaven rallied in the seventh and eighth innings. Key hits included a home run from Brayden Thompson and RBI singles from Owen Abney and JD Weed. Hayden Roberts pitched three innings of relief to earn the win, while Kaleb Smith started and allowed four runs in six innings.

Belhaven now stands at 14-2 overall and returns home Tuesday for a game against Rhodes at 6 p.m. School officials said the team will look to carry its momentum into the upcoming week. Updates can be found on the team’s social media channels.
