Belhaven Alumni Spotlight: Soccer Player Carl Blundell Reflects on Championship and Connection
Carl Blundell, a former Belhaven University soccer player, recalls why he chose the school. He said coach Mac approached him during a Tyler practice and emphasized Belhaven’s competitive potential. “He basically told us that if we all came to Belhaven, we would have a real shot at competing for silverware,” Blundell said. “That was always my goal, and with Belhaven’s history of success, it made the decision easy.”
Blundell’s favorite memory from his time as a Blazer is winning the 2012 national championship. He described the tournament as challenging, with the team barely qualifying after a tough regular season. Top scorer Will suffered a hamstring injury, and in the opening game, their undefeated opponent’s player broke his leg, adding to the adversity. Despite the obstacles, Blundell said the team came together and achieved something special.
He also reflected on what he misses most about playing at Belhaven. “The family aspect of it all,” he said. “Being on the field every day working toward a goal, then spending time together off the field. Whether it was 20 Brazilians cooking and playing guitar or supporting teammates’ ventures, it was more than just soccer. I didn’t realize how good I had it.”
Blundell remains involved in soccer, currently serving as associate head coach at Pearl River Community College and coaching club at GCU. He also keeps up with Belhaven’s success, noting that alumni relations are well-maintained by coach Gleddy.
He praised his teammates, mentioning Victor France’s impressive free kicks and the solid defense of Rodrigo Suarez and Tom Gavin. However, he considers Loic Miliani the best player he played with at Belhaven, describing him as “a special, special player.”
